Occupational Health and Safety research focuses efforts in the identification, prevention, and management of work-related injuries and illnesses of the working population. A substantial amount of injury, illness and death is attributable to or affected by occupational exposures. The Occupational Health and Safety team primarily studies workplace interventions to prevent injuries and disability. Interacting with healthy and injured workers at their worksites to collect information on biomechanical exposures and performing physical examinations and interviews are examples of some methodologies used to assess risk, health, safety, and welfare of workers. Assessments of health outcomes and workplace physical exposures are important aspects of our work in musculoskeletal disease epidemiology and other related diseases. Using outcome measures to help define the optimal treatment and rehabilitation of affected patients can help implement strategies to prevent worker injuries and hasten the return to work among injured workers.
