The focus of the BCL was to advance biomedical research by bringing state-of-the-art computing techniques to the biomedical environment. The program emphasized the close collaboration between scientists active in the relevant technological disciplines and scientists dedicated to biomedical research.

Yearly progress reports were published from 1964 until 1993.
